United States issues security alert to its citizens in Kenya amid ongoing nationwide Azimio mass protests

United States issues security alert to its citizens in Kenya amid ongoing nationwide Azimio mass protests.

The United States embassy in Nairobi has told its citizens to be vigilant during ongoing anti-government protests in the country.

The embassy stated in a statement on March 28 that nationwide protests may happen every week on Mondays and Thursdays indefinitely.

Thus, it gave the public advice to stay away from protest sites, keep an eye on local media for updates, and avoid crowds.

“Keep a low profile, notify friends and family of your safety, be aware of your surroundings, and review your personal security plans,” the alert said in part.

The Embassy also asked their citizens to stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/foreigners, have travel documents up to date and easily accessible, and carry proper Identification, including a US passport with a current Kenyan visa.

It further their citizens to have evacuation plans that do not rely on US government assistance.

The security alert comes amid Azimio’s nationwide mass protests which have been characterized by running battles with the police.

At least two people were shot dead in mysterious circumstances in Kibera during the Monday protests.

Azimio La Umoja coalition has accused police of disrupting demonstrations and being behind the fatal shootings.
