University crisis over 100 percent transition ahead of mass admission

University crisis over 100 percent transition ahead of mass admission in the next academic year as lecturers expose loopholes.

A crisis is looming over universities and other higher education institutions as they prepare for the influx of new students in the upcoming academic year.

University lecturers expressed regret that the government did not take into account some of their demands before executing the 100% transfer from primary to secondary school in their remarks on Friday, October 7.

Dons stated that most higher education institutions rely on part-time lecturers to manage their academic operations since they are understaffed.

“The government came up with a 100 percent policy from primary to secondary, and the students are about to transition to university, yet the institutions are relying on part-time lecturers,” the lecturers stated.

Public institutions are consistently underfunded, said Constantine Wasonga, secretary general of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) adding that a lack of resources is also hampering institutions’ ability to accept new students.

The UASU urged the administration of President William Ruto to provide more funding for hiring lecturers in order to facilitate the mass transition and uphold the 100% transition rate.

In this fiscal year, they argued that 58,000 additional teachers should be hired for public elementary and secondary schools.

The academic calendar is expected to normalize starting January 2023 following the disruption that was caused by the pandemic in 2020.

Nonetheless, the resumption of the normal school calendar will be informed by the policy reviews that will be proposed by the Working Party Education Reforms constituted by Ruto to review the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
