A third-year medical student, Dennis Kamunya from the University of Nairobi, has been found dead in the campus swimming pool under unclear circumstances.

In a statement released by the University of Nairobi Students’ Association (UNSA), Governor Joseph Njogu confirmed that the lifeless body was found in the pool on Tuesday, April 22.

The student, whose online posts indicate he may have been suffering from depression, was in his third year of studies at the Nairobi campus.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague, a third-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery student. The student tragically passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22, “part of the statement reads.

It is unclear whether or not the student, whose name we have opted to withhold, died from suicide.

A glimpse into the student’s thoughts was shared through his post on social media, talking about depression, anxiety and drug addiction.

“The greatest thing about life was that I got to learn about evolution. I belong to one of the few generations that got to know and possibly why we are here,” he wrote.

“Even though anxiety/depression/addiction troubled me, I still count myself lucky,” his post reads on X.

UNSA described the student as a committed and intelligent individual who had a meaningful impact on those around him.

The association urged the students who may be struggling to seek support from the counselling, and they should check on each other.

“In light of the circumstances surrounding his passing, we wish to take this moment to emphasise the importance of mental health.”

“As a community of future healthcare providers, we must continue to normalise open conversation about mental well-being, checking in on each other and seeking help when we need it. No one should struggle in silence,” the statement reads.

A similar incident happened on September 4, involving a fifth-year medical student at the university, whose body was found dead in a case of suspected suicide.

According to the police, the body of a fifth-year medical student was found with his head covered with nylon paper at the main hall residence long after he had died on the evening of September 2.
