Strathmore University student dies after jumping off Gateway Mall rooftop amid increasing cases of suicides.

A 22-year-old Strathmore University student died after jumping from the fifth story of the Gateway Mall in Syokimau, Machakos County.

The mall’s administration claimed that on Tuesday night, the student walked to the rooftop and jumped off to the ground floor.

The student died on the spot from the impact of falling.

The events that led to the incident were not immediately clear as the police are still investigating the matter.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

Witnesses said Mbugua was alone at the time of the incident.

Cases of university students committing suicide have been on the rise, raising concerns among mental health experts.

The mental health crisis in the country has also extended beyond the student community.

Last week, another student from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) jumped off an incomplete five-story building within the institution after her girlfriend left him.

The second-year student failed to attend morning classes, which raised concerns from his friends who later found his body next to the incomplete building.

Elsewhere along Lower Kirinyaga Road in the city centre, a 24-year-old man died after jumping off the fourth floor of an apartment.

A suicide note recovered from the scene indicated Kelvin Barasa was frustrated over a disagreement with his girlfriend, police and witnesses said.

Witnesses said the deceased jumped from Ezzy apartment and landed on the ground floor sustaining multiple body injuries.

The body was picked up and taken to the mortuary pending autopsy and other processes.

In Kibwezi, Makueni County, police said a 52-year-old man died by hanging himself on a tree. The body of Mutunga Muthoka was found long after he had died.

A nylon rope was found tied on his neck, police said. The motive of the incident in Milu village is yet to be known.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise amid calls for action to stop the trend. Most of the cases are linked to mental trauma.

According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey 2022, men aged 15-49 suffer from depression at a rate of 3.1 percent while women of the same age bracket suffer at 4 percent.

The leading causes among the youth include poverty, unemployment, the death of a loved one, substance abuse, and relationships.
