The government’s efforts in dealing with the effects of drought received a shot in the arm from the Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Wednesday, January 25.
This comes after a US church gave Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua a Ksh124 million (USD1 million) food contribution in support of the initiative.
DP Gachagua received the gift at his office in the Harambee House Annex, where the church’s leaders had previously paid him a visit out of politeness.
“This donation will benefit 40,000 households, an equivalent of 200,000 people,” Gachagua announced in a statement.
The deputy president further appreciated the efforts of partners in helping the government combat drought.
“We appreciate our friends and partners for their continued support towards Kenyans affected by the drought situation, especially in ASAL counties,” a statement from his office read in part.
A nontrinitarian Christian church that believes it is the restoration of the first church founded by Jesus Christ is the Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known colloquially as the LDS Church or Mormon Church.

The church has congregations and temples all throughout the world, and its headquarters are in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States.
LDS missionaries began serving in Kenya in 1980. There was only one LDS missionary couple from then until 1989 when the couple was withdrawn.
The food donation comes as the nation struggles to recover from a devastating drought that claimed a large number of human and cattle lives, particularly in the counties in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs).
As a result, in November 2022, President William Ruto established a drought mitigation team and plan to remedy the situation. Rigathi Gachagua, the deputy president, will receive the team’s report.
Ruto also disclosed that the government has set aside Ksh2 billion to provide food aid to regions impacted by the severe drought.
