US Embassy in Nairobi cautions American citizens over the ongoing ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests in the Nairobi CBD.
In an advisory on Tuesday, June 18, the US Embassy urged US citizens to be vigilant and avoid large gatherings around the Nairobi CBD.
“There is a planned protest about the Finance Bill of 2024 in the area of the Parliament of Kenya in the Central Business District beginning at 12:00 pm. Organizers have stated that the events are intended to be peaceful.
“However, large public gatherings can turn violent at any moment. It is recommended to remain vigilant and aware of circumstances and avoid large gatherings. Traffic disruptions are expected,” the advisory read in part.
The US Embassy advised American citizens to avoid protest areas and demonstrations, monitor local media for updates, Keep a low profile, and notify friends and family of their safety.
The embassy also urges US citizens to be aware of their surroundings, review personal security plans, stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/foreigners, and have travel documents that are up to date and easily accessible.
Further, the American citizens were advised to carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Kenyan visa and not to rely on the US government for evacuation assistance.

Police meet ahead of ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests’
Kenyans are currently engaged in running battles with anti-riot police officers as they are protesting against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.
The bill, which has already faced heavy opposition from a number of Kenyans, seeks to increase revenue for the government through heavy taxation.
The police have arrested some of the protesters and took them into custody and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse other protestors.
The protestors have vowed to march to parliament buildings in the protests duped ‘Occupy Parliament’, demanding that their legislators lend a voice to their transgressions on proposed punitive taxes within the bill.
Kenyans have continued demanding that parliament do away with the bill despite the government-allied faction of legislators proposing changes to a Finance Committee report to be tabled to parliament on Tuesday afternoon.
