US announces 12.4B funding to provide access to cleaner and reliable energy across East Africa.

On June 21, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced a Ksh12.4 billion award to help East Africa have access to cleaner and more reliable energy.

Samantha Power, the administrator of USAID, stated in a statement that the program will assist 10 million homes and businesses in gaining access to electricity.

Additionally, Ksh659 billion will be mobilized by the initiative to encourage both public and private investments in order to support 1,277 megawatts of sustainable energy capacity.

The administrator claims that the goal is to provide 50 million people in the region with access to power produced from cleaner fuel sources.

The program will support the development of 1,500 kilometres of new transmission lines to reinforce the initiative.

Further, Power praised the relationship between the US and Kenya and emphasized the superpower’s commitment to supporting Kenya in clean energy initiatives.

“US-Kenya ties are producing results as the US is now Kenya’s largest export market. We provide drought assistance, support Kenya’s energy sector which uses 90 percent renewables and spur tech partnerships in Silicon Savannah,” she stated.

The Program, according to Power, has provided connectivity to over 172 million people across Africa. International markets have in the past been on a rallying call for the African continent to fast-track the shift to sustainable power.

This was supported by a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in May 2023, which revealed that many African countries were steadily shifting from fossil fuels.
