US Secretary of State Antony Blinken calls President William Ruto over ongoing conflict in the region including in Sudan.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday said that he engaged President William Ruto in talks to advance shared interests between Kenya and the US.

In a statement, Blinken stated that among the issues discussed included ending the conflict in Sudan and advancing the East African Community-led talks on eastern DRC.

Blinken expressed appreciation for Kenya’s contributions to regional peace and stability, including its leadership in addressing the crisis in Sudan and advancing East African Community-led talks to ease tensions in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Secretary also encouraged peaceful and constructive dialogue to resolve political differences in Kenya.

Additionally, the Secretary and President Ruto discussed Kenya’s positive consideration of leading a multinational force in Haiti.

Ruto has been spearheading mediation toward the restoration of democratic rule in the troubled Sudan.

Earlier this month, IGAD proposed an initiative that would include the deployment of peacekeepers in the capital Khartoum.

However, the Sudanese army has repeatedly rejected the Kenyan-led initiative, accusing the regional power of supporting the RSF.

It has said it would consider any foreign peacekeepers as enemy forces.

Conflicts have also been experienced in eastern DRC as Consultative Technical Team meetings involving various stakeholders of the region’s Peace Process have been held to discuss various issues highlighted in the Luanda and Nairobi processes.

Conflicting parties in the eastern DRC have been a key topic of discussion during the sessions, along with cantonment issues and confidence-building measures.

The technical team, led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, has worked to develop long-term peace solutions to the conflict.
