Coons finally revealed details of his meeting with Ruto, and Raila that solved political unrest in the country.
Delaware Senator Chris Coons in a statement on Monday, April 3, stated that during his talks with Kenyan leaders, he encouraged the opposition leader and the president to find a path forward on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) that would recognize the role of strong, effective opposition in a multiparty system.
In his observation, Coons expressed his appreciation with the decision made by President William Ruto on Sunday, April 2 (to call for dialogue), stressing that it was only during the meetings that Ruto committed to addressing concerns about the IEBC and discussing a course of action.
The Senator also mentioned that Meg Whitman, the American ambassador to Kenya, participated in all of their meetings.
“Ruto committed to addressing concerns about the IEBC and negotiating a path forward for Azimio to serve as an effective opposition.
“Odinga welcomed Ruto’s outreach and agreed to suspend planned demonstrations for the coming week. Senator Coons expressed his gratitude to all parties and his belief that to preserve and strengthen democracy,” read a brief on his website detailing his travel to Kenya.
The senator added that he had urged political leaders to hold those responsible for the attacks and the damage of property, including those of former President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga, accountable.
Also, he expressed his concerns to Gachagua and Ruto regarding the overzealous use of force by the police and the assaults on journalists during the Azimio-led protest.
