Wajackoyah demands a share of the opposition office as he supports a proposal to introduce the official leader of the opposition

Wajackoyah demands a share of the opposition office as he supports a proposal to introduce the official leader of the opposition.

Former presidential candidate, George Wajackoyah has welcomed the idea put out by several MPs to create the office of official opposition leader.

The leader of the Roots Party referred to the suggestion as a “fine amendment” and announced his support for the action that would alter Kenya’s opposition politics.

He urged, however, that the amendment include positions for additional opposition leaders in addition to the official opposition leader, including his party, which finished third in the general election held in August.

“The intention to have the Office of the Official opposition is a welcome move, but it should be split into two to allow Raila to be the chief Opposition leader while I become another opposition leader,” Wajackoyah stated while speaking to Nation Africa on Thursday, December 9.

Wajackoyah further, he reiterated that the amendment to entrench the office in the Constitution should be executed through popular initiative, arguing that it would interfere with the government structure.

“This is a good amendment that must be through a popular initiative because it touches on the structure of the governance,” he added.

The proposal generated debate, with various politicians adopting opposing positions on whether the office—which was made redundant when the 2010 Constitution was adopted—should be reinstated.

According to a group of leaders connected to the Kenya Kwanza administration, if the office was proposed in parliament and fit with the party’s goals, the ruling party would support its creation.

However, a few members of the Azimio la Umoja Coalition expressed their skepticism about the introduction’s purpose.

Lang’ata, legislator and a member of the Orange Democratic Movement- ODM party described the proposal as a ploy to tame opposition chief Raila Odinga.

“The creation of the office of the opposition is a move to tame Raila Odinga. I do not support the move because I believe in the streets, they are louder than any official office, the streets advocated for the Constitution we have,” Jalang’o stated on Friday, December 9.
