Wajackoyah’s candidature for presidency questioned over UK citizenship
Wajackoyah’s candidature for presidency in the forthcoming general elections questioned over UK citizenship.
Roots Party presidential candidate Prof George Wajackoyah has become a sensation in Kenya for his controversial manifesto after he declared his presidential bid.
He has promised to legalize bhang among other controversial agendas generate more revenue to offset the country’s debt.
However, Wajackoyah’s candidature for the presidency has been questioned regarding the status of his UK citizenship.
Former presidential aspirant Peter Gichira has written to the British High Commission, regarding the status of Wajackoyah’s UK citizenship.
In a letter to British High Commission in Kenya, Gichira through his lawyers questioned whether Wajackoyah had renounced his rights as a British citizen, making him eligible to vie in Kenya.
“We write on behalf of our client to get clear clarification on whether the above-named candidate is a British Citizen, and if so, has he renounced such citizenship rights?” Gachie Mwanza asked.
Mwanza pointed out that according to British law, Wajackoyah vying meant he was either a citizen of the UK or Ireland or a citizen of a Commonwealth country.
Mwanza added that according to Kenyan law, only citizens of the country are eligible to vie for the State Office.
He added that Article 78 (1) of Citizenship and Leadership states that a State Officer or a member of the defence forces should not hold dual citizenship.
The Article further says the aforementioned clauses do not apply to any person who has been made a citizen of another country by operation of that country’s law without the ability to opt-out.
The Root party leader has claimed that he vied for the Tottenham parliamentary seat in the UK.
In an interview with NTV, Wajackoyah said he was disqualified because he was not married.
He explained at the primary level after filling a questionnaire, he skipped the married part because he was not legally married.
“I have stood for elections in the UK. I was told you are not enough. You are not ripe enough to be a member of parliament for Tottenham because we have checked in this list that you have children but no wife,” Wajackoyah said.
