Why I stopped 'Brookside' powder milk from Uganda- Ruto

Ruto reveals he stopped the importation of powder milk from Uganda because of exploitation by connected individuals

Ruto reveals he stopped the importation of powder milk from Uganda because of exploitation by connected individuals.

In an interview with Inooro TV, Ruto revealed that certain people with connections have been importing milk from other countries and ‘sneaking’ it into Kenya by taking advantage of the commercial ties between EAC members.

“There is milk from our neighbouring country and oftentimes it’s not from their farms. This is milk from foreign countries, taken to factories, and processed. A milk company in Kenya is the one doing that,” Ruto stated.

He emphasized that such practices cannot be allowed in Kenya as they impact the local farmers negatively.

“We closed down the operation because there is no way a company operating in Kenya can get milk from foreign countries, process it then sell it and the local farmer is not paid his dues. We cannot allow that,” Ruto added.

However, President Ruto shed light on ongoing talks with EAC countries, geared at ensuring fair trade in the region.

“We sat with our neighbours and told them that we respect the EAC regulations but we must have an understanding that the milk should be from your farms,” he disclosed.

In March, the Kenya Dairy Board suspended the importation of milk powder in the country in March to cushion local farmers from uncompetitive trade practices.

Farmers, according to KDB, were anticipating the prolonged rains, which would lead to a rise in milk production.

However, the board stated that the suspension was only temporary.

Margaret Kibogy, KDB Managing Director revealed that more discussions were ongoing to ensure the Kenyan farmer is protected. The temporary ban was lifted a week later.

After assuming office, Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua set up measures to crack down on cartels in the milk, tea, and coffee industries.

The President assured that his administration will increase the number of milk cooling plants across the nation.
