ODM has abruptly postponed ODM@20 celebrations in Mombasa

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has postponed its highly anticipated 20th anniversary celebrations that were set to take place in Mombasa County from October 10th to 12th, 2025.

In a statement released on Friday, October 3, Junet Mohammed announced that the main celebrations in Mombasa have been rescheduled following a consultative meeting with party leader Raila Odinga.

After careful consideration, the party leader agreed to requests from various counties that had not yet been visited during the ongoing party anniversary engagements.

“After careful consideration, the Party Leader graciously agreed to our request to expand the program and ensure inclusivity by engaging with more counties before converging in Mombasa for the grand celebrations,” the statement read.

Mohammed explained that the postponement would allow the party to conduct activities across several counties before the main event.

The revised calendar will see ODM host a soccer tournament on the 9th and 10th of October, followed by visits to Kailado County on October 15th, Turkana County on October 26th, Kilifi County’s Magarini constituency on November 2nd, and Nairobi County on November 9th.

These activities will culminate in the grand celebrations in Mombasa, now scheduled for November 14th to 16th, 2025.

Mohammed emphasized that the postponement was designed to strengthen outreach and deepen inclusivity across the party’s strongholds.

“We wish to assure our members, supporters, and the general public that the postponement is meant to strengthen our outreach, deepen inclusivity, and ensure that this milestone in our party’s history is celebrated by all Kenyans, in line with our values of unity, democracy, and participation,” he stated.

The ODM@20 celebrations have been months in the making, with extensive preparations underway for what the party described as a historic commemoration.

In a press release dated September 19, 2025, the party’s National Executive Committee, chaired by National Chairperson Governor Gladys Wanga, had convened in Nairobi to review preparations for the upcoming celebrations.

The NEC adopted a rich programme of activities for the official celebrations in Mombasa and Kilifi Counties.

The plan included a four-team knockout football tournament featuring some of Kenya’s most storied clubs: AFC Leopards SC, Bandari FC, Gor Mahia FC, and Shabana FC. The tournament was designed to bring together football enthusiasts and party supporters to celebrate sport and unity.

Beyond sports, the party had planned a Youth Summit to bring together young leaders from across the country, recognizing the critical role of youth in shaping the movement’s future.

A Women’s Convention was also on the agenda, aimed at highlighting the role of women in the struggle for democracy and social justice.

The programme included a PwD Breakfast focusing on inclusion and empowerment, demonstrating the party’s commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities remain central to national conversations.

As preparations intensified, the party issued a delegate registration notice on September 23, 2025, indicating it would cater for selected participants from all 290 constituencies. Still, it welcomed other party members who wished to attend the celebrations at their own expense to register through the party’s online portal.

The registration portal was opened with a deadline of Monday, 29th September 2025.
