A 71-year-old woman identified as Josephine Aoko Otala died after being electrocuted during a night vigil on a Saturday morning.

The incident happened in the Nyawara area, Yala, in Siaya county.

Police officers reported that a tent had been set up for the funeral and electricity was connected for lighting.

However, the electrician who installed the power left exposed live wires hanging.

Otala is said to have walked to the tent where the coffin was placed and touched the metal rods supporting the structure, which led to her being instantly electrocuted.

Other mourners fled in panic. The power supply was cut off, and Kenya Power officials were notified. Her body was later taken to the mortuary as investigations got underway.

In a similar incident, a four-year-old boy identified as Alex Mwangi died as a result of electrocution after touching a metal pole used to raise a TV aerial on Saturday.

According to police, a report about the incident was received from a resident of Kagumo village after getting wind of the matter from her cousin.

The child, however, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The minor had been taken by his family members for first aid at Kagumo Vision Centre before being referred to Kerugoya Level Five Hospital.

The victim, identified as Fundi Mutinda, was working alongside colleagues when the incident happened. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Police confirmed that investigations were ongoing, noting that power was typically shut off before such maintenance was conducted.

Authorities stated they would collaborate with Kenya Power to establish the cause of the incident.
