DP Gachagua slams Azimio coalition for criticizing Finance Bill 2023 adding that the bill will sail through in the parliament.

On Saturday, Rigathi Gachagua, the vice president, clashed with a section of  Azimio leaders over their criticism of the Finance Bill, 2023.

The DP said the Bill will sail through Parliament because the opposition has no numbers to stop it.

”Even if you oppose the bill, it will go through because you don’t have the numbers, why would you oppose something that will go through?’ Gachagua posed.

The DP wondered how come the leaders are pushing the government for development yet they are opposed to its proposals on raising revenue.

Speaking at St Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Kitui, Gachagua challenged the opposition leaders to stop the hypocrisy and speak the truth of ‘men’.

”Let us be truthful and I am a man who speaks the truth, we must collect taxes to finance our development and recurrent,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua said it was unfortunate that opposition leaders are calling for protests against the Bill without telling Kenyans where money will come from to pay civil servants.

”We have employed 35, 000 teachers and we shall be recruiting the same number next year, my Sh1 million salary cannot pay them, we must collect taxes from the people,” he said.

”There is no way you can ask for development for schools and roads and then say we should not collect taxes,” he said.

Gachagua was responding after Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu launched criticisms over the controversial Finance Bill, 2023.

The MP said since his election as MP, he has never seen a controversial Finance Bill like the 2023 one that has been proposed by the Kenya Kwanza government.

He that the money belongs to taxpayers and therefore they must have a say on how they will be taxed.

”For the last 11 years I have been in Parliament, I have never seen a bill that is seriously opposed like this one, let us sit down on a round table and agree,” he said.

”Please re-look at the increase of VAT from 8 percent to 1 percent and the housing levy and I will have no problem with the bill,” the MP added.
