Zubeida Kananu re-elected President of Kenya Editors Guild for 2nd term

Kananu was elected on Saturday in a tight election that saw her beat Citizen TV’s Yvonne Okwara, her main contender.
She garnered 72 votes against Okwara, who bagged 58 votes in the elections held on Saturday, May 24.
Kananu will be deputized by Francis Openda. The elections took place during the Guild’s Special General Meeting.
The elections took place a month after being postponed. Initially, they were to happen on April 12, but were postponed due to a lack of quorum.
Acknowledging the outcome of the polls, Okwara expressed her respect for the democratic choice of the members and graciously accepted her defeat.
“This has been a spirited campaign, and while I had hoped for a different outcome, I accept the result with grace, and I remain proud of the message we carried – one of renewal, credibility, and collective purpose,” Okwara said.

In a heartfelt message, Okwara congratulated her biggest contender and others who were elected during the elections.
“To the incoming leadership: I extend my sincere congratulations. You have a big task ahead of you- to unite the guild and to restore trust in our shared institution. I wish you wisdom, clarity, and courage in this journey,” the Citizen TV journalist said.
Other elected members elected during the elections are Agnes Mwangangi elected as Member for Radio, Julius Bosire as member for academia, Mildred Awuor as television representative, Linda Bach print representative, while Kenfrey Kiberenge was elected as online/digital representative.
Others are Ruth Nesoba, Martin Masai, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a, elected as trustees.
As the president of the Guild, Kananu will continue with her crucial role of promoting media freedom, professionalism, and credibility in Kenya.
