20 Al-Shabaab militants in an attack at Quick Response Unit Camp in Mandera fire bombs, and several rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) reinforced with PKM and AK47 riffles.
On Friday, December 29, a group of twenty suspected militants attacked the Mandera County camp of the Quick Response Unit (QRU), Alungu, in Lafey.
According to a police report, the gunmen attacked the camp from the northwest direction at around 11:50 am.
The suspected militants fired bombs, and several rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) reinforced with PKM and AK47 riffles within a distance of one hundred meters to the camp.
QRU officers responded to the attack swiftly and managed to repulse them within fifteen minutes.
“Officers who were alert responded swiftly and engaged them for 15 minutes but managed to repulse them,” the police report read in part.
According to the police report no officer was injured during the attack and everyone was accounted for.
“No injuries on our side and all officers accounted while on the enemy side pending confirmation during clearance at first light. Currently, the situation is under control,” the report added.

The attack comes days after gunmen attacked a key Safaricom communications mast in Majir county, cutting off all communications in the area.
On December 7, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the government is focused on neutralizing the threats posed by terrorists.
“The Government remains seized of the security situation in Lamu County to neutralize the threats posed by terrorists, extremist ideologues, and other criminals. It is gratifying to note the significant progress made by the Multi-Agency Operation Linda Boni, and the commendable and patriotic sacrifices of our officers,” he stated.
