Azimio is desperate to have a Speaker of either House, William Ruto warns his MPs

William Ruto warns his MPs to be vigilant ahead of the election of speakers of the national assembly and senate.

The contest for Speakers of the two Houses of Parliament is heating up with both camps of the political divide Azimio and Kenya Kwanza alliance hosting a parliamentary group on Wednesday in an effort to strengthen their camps.

In a meeting with his Kenya Kwanza MPs, President-elect William Ruto told the MPs should not miss the voting session to ensure the alliance backs the two coveted positions.

William Ruto warned his camp to be wary of the days leading up to the Speaker’s seat election, alluding to a probable plot to thwart their candidate’s stab at victory by targeting their numbers adding that the Azimio coalition is desperate to back Speaker positions in the Senate and the National Assembly.

“People who can use the Security Committee to try and overturn the will of the people can do worse. They’re very desperate to have the Speaker of either House,” he told the legislators ahead of Thursday’s election in Parliament.

He urged the elected MPs to stay vigilant saying they may be arrested ahead of tomorrow.

“Be careful, they could possibly arrest some of you just to reduce our numbers,” he said.

The two Houses of Parliament are set to convene for their first sittings on Thursday, during which they’re expected to take the oath of office and then elect their respective Speakers afterward.

Kenya Kwanza has fronted Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula as its candidate in the National Assembly Speaker race, with Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Boss as his deputy.

The duo will be battling it out with Azimio’s choice of Kenneth Marende and Dadaab MP-elect Farah Maalim.

In the Senate, on the other hand, former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has been picked as Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s choice and Meru Senator-elect Kathure Murungi was nominated as his deputy.

Azimio fronted Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the Senate Speaker seat and forwarded Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo’s name for the Senate Deputy Speaker post.
