President William Ruto has no intention of keeping Attorney General Paul Kihara Kariuki with numerous reports that at least three senior lawyers close to the new administration are jostling for the post.
Also at stake at the State Law Office is the position of Solicitor General, currently held by Kennedy Ogeto.
Kariuki’s appearance at State House on Wednesday during the delayed swearing-in of six judges, and how he was treated at the function sparked a debate that his exit could be looming.
As other members of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and top government officials occupied seats on the red carpet, Kihara Kariuki’s seat was on the periphery, off the carpet.
Kariuki appeared to be an unexpected attendee at the occasion in addition to being lonely and secluded.
His seat appeared to have been added at the end of the row after the sitting arrangement had been decided.
The AG gave off the sense of being an outsider even though he will continue to serve as the government’s top lawyer and a member of the JSC until a replacement is named.
Chief Justice (retired) David Maraga was among those occupying the front row seats.
The former president’s decision to refuse the appointment and swearing-in of the six judges was attributed to Kihara Kariuki and Solicitor General Ogeto by the country’s bar association, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

Ruto’s longtime attorneys Katwa Kigen, Ahmednasir Abdullahi, and the former Tharaka Nithi senator, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, are among those rumored to be interested in the AG’s position.
Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi is also mentioned.
Mr. Sing’oei, an international lawyer, academic, and author, is among those rumored to be interested in the position of Solicitor General; nevertheless, he may also be retained as William Ruto’s legal advisor.
Prior to this, he worked as the Katiba Institute’s litigation director and as a rule of law specialist for the US Agency for International Development.
Kigen, and Prof Kindiki, represented Ruto at the collapsed crimes against humanity case at the International Criminal Court.
Abdullahi is representing Weston Hotel in the land dispute.
