IEBC commissioner Francis Wanderi resigns days after being suspended from office by President William Ruto

IEBC commissioner Francis Wanderi resigns days after being suspended from office by President William Ruto.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)commissioner becomes the third of the four besieged commissioners who were set to face a tribunal on their conduct following a parliamentary vote and the formation of a Justice Aggrey Muchelule-led team.

Commissioner Justus Nyang’aya was the first to call it quits on Friday and Juliana Cherera resigned on Monday.

Francis Wanderi, who was among the four embattled commissioners, tendered his resignation on Thursday, December 8, over what he termed as a predetermined fate in the process of evaluating their suitability conducted by the tribunal.

His resignation left Irene Masit as the only commissioner in office from the bracket of the four officials targetted by four petitions submitted in the National Assembly.

The National Assembly recommended that President William Ruto suspend the four commissioners.

The Head of State then established a tribunal under the direction of Justice Aggrey Mchelule with the responsibility of looking into the four officials before making a decision about their future.

It’s important to note that the three commissioners’ departure ran the risk of throwing the election commission’s quorum requirements into disarray.

Wafula Chebukati, the commission’s chair, and the other two commissioners are anticipated to retire in January, leaving the agency without a functional commissioner to oversee its operations.

Politicians affiliated with the opposition faction had expressed their reservations against the process in what they termed as an infringement of IEBC’s independence.

Azimio la Umoja leaders led by Raila Odinga denounced the process, arguing that the state was planning to pre-rig the 2027 elections.

“Ruto needs to be stopped from putting a place a commission that will be his puppet. If not, then there will not be any elections,” Raila stated during a consultation rally at Kamukunji Grounds.
