ODM MPs demand the position of Minority Leader in National Assembly after appointment of Wandayi as CS

ODM women MPs back Millie Odhiambo for Minority Leader in National Assembly after Wandayi CS nomination
ODM women MPs back Millie Odhiambo for Minority Leader in National Assembly after Wandayi CS nomination.
Women Members of Parliament affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party on Wednesday endorsed Suba North legislator Millie Odhiambo for the position of Minority leader.
While addressing the National Assembly during an afternoon session, Kisumu West lawmaker, Rozaah Buyu urged Speaker Moses Wetangula to consider choosing Millie for the vacant post.
According to Buyu, the right time had come for a woman to get appointed to the position of Minority Leader as an appreciation of the crucial role they play in supporting the party.
If appointed to the position, Millie Odhiambo would replace Ugenya MP James Opiyo Wandayi who was nominated for the position of Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary.
During his announcement at State House on Wednesday, President William Ruto nominated James Wandayi to the new position alongside his ODM counterparts, John Mbadi (Treasury) and Hassan Joho (Mining).
Wandayi’s nomination as the energy minister meant he would step down from the position of Minority Leader in the National Assembly and similarly drop his post as an MP.
Meanwhile, Rozaah Buyu while making the recommendation, alleged the ODM women MPs were loyal to the party and thus deserved the position.
“We have seen women be at the forefront of Azimio and it is time that a woman is allowed to lead this house,” Rozaah Buyu commented.
I am speaking of a woman who is distinguished in terms of her debates in this house. I am talking about a distinguished lawyer and human rights campaigner,” he added.

Rozaah Buyu’s sentiments come amidst allegations of division within the ODM following the nomination of a section of party leaders to Ruto’s cabinet.
The comments also follow hardly a day after Azimio leader Raila Odinga dismissed claims of working with the Head of State.
In a presser, Odinga clarified the party’s position was geared more towards calling for a national conversation to address the pertinent issues raised by Kenyans.
The former Prime Minister expressed his support for the youthful protesters who have in the recent past been staging demonstrations to hold the government accountable.
“Our commitment to the causes championed by Gen-Z remains steadfast. These are the same issues we have long been fighting for, including during last year’s Maandamano protests,” Odinga clarified.
