Wetang’ula rejects MP request to withdraw Gachagua impeachment signature

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has rejected a request by Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto to withdraw his signature in support of a motion to impeach DP Rigathi Gachagua

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has rejected a request by Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto to withdraw his signature in support of a motion to impeach DP Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaker Wetang’ula, while addressing MPs during debate on the impeachment motion said he had received a letter from Wandeto purporting to withdraw his signature.

“I received a letter from Geofrrey Wandeto purporting to withdraw his signature. I want to invite the honourable members to read the Standing Orders that are very clear. Once you append your signature to a Special Motion, you have crossed the rubicon and you cannot withdraw that signature,” he stated.

Rubicon is a bounding or limiting line; especially one that when crossed commits a person irrevocably.

A total of 291 of the 345 members of the National Assembly appended their signatures in support of the impeachment motion against the Deputy President.

The DP only managed less than 20 percent of the House, as the MPs in the National Assembly shot over and beyond the required 117-member threshold by 174 members to have the historic motion tabled.

The National Assembly currently has 345 members, 4 members shy of the constitutional 349 occupants.

Banisa, Magarini, and Ugunja constituencies are vacant, while ODM’s nomination slot previously occupied by Treasury CS John Mbadi is yet to be filled.
