The Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) has announced plans to register all sugar packers in the country

The Agriculture Food Authority (AFA) has announced plans to register all sugar packers in the country.

Through a public notice, the authority explained that the move was aimed at tracing sugar sold across shelves in shops and supermarkets in the country.

AFA added that the move would also promote and enhance compliance over packaging of the items used in many households.

As planned, the registration process will commence on October 10, 2024.

“Pursuant to the Provisions of the Crops Act No. 16 of 2013, the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) intends to register all sugar packers for purposes of enhancing traceability and monitoring of sugar quality at the retail shelves,” read the notice in part.

“All sugar packers are therefore required to provide their details by filling in Form (9) (Application for Registration of Sugar Repackaging) which is available on the AFA website and submit the same to AFA – Sugar Directorate.”

Therefore, the packers were instructed to submit various documentation to the authority for registration.

The required documents include the trademark registration certificate, a sample of the brand, a certificate of incorporation or business name, a valid tax compliance certificate and an ID or passport of directors.

Details to be provided to the authority also include the weight to be repackaged (Kgs or grams) and approved compliance and labelling requirements issued by KEBS.
