Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang'wa says part of embattled DP Gachagua security retail reinstated

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa says part of embattled DP Gachagua security retail reinstated.

Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has had part of his security reinstated, a week after complaining that his life was in danger.

Gachagua, who is embroiled in an intense legal battle to save his seat as Deputy President, attended a church service in Kiambu County with enhanced security detail.

The latest development was also confirmed by Gachagua’s close ally –  Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa.

“The state has reinstated part of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s security detail,” the Senator said on Sunday, adding, “In the same spirit, I urge the government to take the next honourable step and reinstate his employees as well. Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.

Senator Thang’wa was one of the few leaders still allied to Gachagua who accompanied him to the church function in Kiambu on Sunday.

Cleophas Malala, Senators John Methu (Nyandarua) and Joe Nyutu (Murang’a) were also present at the Saint James ACK Cathedral.

A new team has also been posted at the ousted Deputy President’s home in Karen to oversee his security.

The latest developments came barely a week after Gachagua emerged with some explosive comments, days after he was taken ill in hospital whilst in the middle of a Senate trial.

On Sunday, October 20, Gachagua went on a passionate tirade outside the Karen Hospital where he lamented about having his security detail withdrawn. The ousted DP also alleged higher powers in government blocked him from attending the Mashujaa Day function in Kwale County.

In the aftermath of Gachagua’s impeachment, the DP’s office was thrown into further disarray after it emerged that 108 staff at his office were told to go on compulsory leave. Some of the members of the ousted DP’s staff were turned away from the Harambee House Annex in Nairobi when they attempted to report to work.

During his address in Kiambu, Gachagua, known for his cut-throat comments, also directly addressed the President, confirming the fallout between the two.

“We forgive but we don’t forget,” Gachagua said. “I’ve heard people saying that 3 years is a lot of time that by 2027, people will have forgotten. Even the atrocities meted on us by the white man, the pain we suffered under President Moi, we still remember. When the time is right, we will address the issue at hand. But at the moment, we will keep quiet.”

The ousted DP also named struggling key sectors in the country which Kenyans have been critical of in the last few weeks as he called on the President to correct them.
