Senator Maanzo claims Ruto has handed over power to Raila after recent political developments

Senator Maanzo claims Ruto has handed over power to Raila after recent political developments.

Makueni County Senator Dan Maanzo has weighed in on the recent possible political alignment between former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and President William, following Raila’s defeat in the AUC, arguing that the act symbolizes a shift in power dynamics.

Speaking on a local media station on February 25, 2025, Maanzo asserted that Ruto’s recent political developments indicate a cessation of governmental control to opposition leader Raila Odinga.

He pointed to public engagements where the duo addressed the public as evidence that public participation in the new political arrangement is already complete.

“Consultations have already been made, and the decision is between two people—Raila Odinga and William Ruto. In fact, immediately after that, they did a rally, and you saw Hassan Joho engaging the public. So, public participation is over,” Maanzo stated.

The senator further referenced the 2022 presidential election petition, where Raila’s legal team challenged Ruto’s win at the Supreme Court, only for their case to be dismissed as lacking substance.

He suggested that despite that ruling, the opposition now wields substantial influence in government.

“Remember, we went to the Supreme Court to petition a stolen election, and we had overwhelming evidence, yet we were described as hot air.

Now, the power belongs to the people, and the people are with Raila Odinga,” he added.

Maanzo claimed that the opposition has essentially formed a government within the broad-based government, dictating key decisions.

“The opposition is now in government and calling the shots. Therefore, I don’t know what Ruto is going to do in this country. He has handed over power. The only thing left with him is the symbolic sword—all other powers will be executed elsewhere,” Maanzo remarked.

Maanzo’s statement comes at a time when key government allies are pushing for the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report to create a position for Raila in the broad-based government.

In a social media post on Sunday, February 24, 2025, Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei asserted that Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila will not return to opposition politics after his unsuccessful bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

He emphasized that Odinga’s vast experience and energy would contribute to Kenya’s prosperity and dismissed critics who expected him to rejoin the opposition.

“Ruto with the incoming PM /PCS discussing the welfare of our beloved country. Baba Raila Odinga has vast experience and energy to offer for prosperity for Kenya. The unity and peace of our nation shall spur the growth of our country.

He further warned critics, adding, “To naysayers, ole wenu [woe unto you]! Raila shall not join them in doing opposition politics and undermining the government. Mutangoja sana [you will wait for long].”
