CS Murkomen demands arrests of politicians behind Gachagua goon attack
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed plans to crack down on and prosecute politicians suspected of sponsoring criminal gangs across the country.
The CS issued the new directives on Tuesday, April 8, during a community engagement forum in Kwale County, where he warned that the government would no longer tolerate insecurity, which he claims is mainly sponsored by political elements.
According to Murkomen, organised gangs on the coast, such as the “Panga Boys,” comprised of youth of school-going age, were being used by powerful individuals to further specific political agendas.
“While I appreciate the cooperation of local leaders who are working closely with security agencies to curb crime, it is regrettable that some politicians are sabotaging these efforts by bankrolling criminal groups,” said Murkomen during the meeting, which brought together residents, elected leaders, chiefs, assistant chiefs, security personnel, civil society groups, youth representatives, and community elders.
The CS added, “I have directed their immediate arrest and prosecution. Security agencies and local administrators have been instructed to act firmly and without hesitation.”
‘Panga Boys’ have been prevalent at the coast, particularly in Kilifi County, where the gang is known to injure and loot from residents.

Further, Murkomen revealed the government would be undertaking a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach to tackle insecurity going forward.
The Tuesday meeting was just one of many in Murkomen’s itinerary as he embarks on a “Jukwaa la Usalama” tour, meant to foster dialogue with various communities across the country.
The issue of politically motivated chaos has been prevalent in the country in recent weeks, with one of the latest alleged incidents being witnessed on Sunday, April 6, during a church service attended by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
During the church service at the PCEA church in Mwiki, goons attempted to infiltrate the church to demand money from the former DP, prompting his security detail to fire in the air to disperse them.
Gachagua has since claimed the incident was politically motivated, alleging that goons had been deployed to derail his event.
Meanwhile, the National Police Service blamed the former DP’s camp for failure to notify dignitaries that a politician of his stature would be at a local church service.
