Kenya turns to China for JKIA expansion after cancellation of Adani deal
Kenya has requested the Beijing Urban Construction Group to bid for the JKIA expansion plan.
The request was made by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Tuesday, April 22, when he met officials of the Chinese company.
He reiterated that the JKIA needed to be modernised even as the government looks for private investors for the deal.
He expressed that the company had experience in the sector, given that it had built over 30 airport terminals.
“Ahead of H.E. President William Ruto’s State Visit, I met with Mr. Raymond Luo, President of BUCG International, Mr. Harold Huang, General Manager of Marketing, and Mr. Wei Zhang, Vice President for Southeast Africa, to discuss their expertise in airport construction,” read the statement in part.

“They shared insights from their 42 years of experience building over 30 airport terminals, runways, and specialised aviation facilities worldwide. I encouraged them to submit their expression of interest as Kenya prepares to invite contractors for the upcoming JKIA expansion.”
Kenya has been pursuing investors to undertake the expansion of JKIA.
The Kenya Kwanza administration had already begun talks with Adani Group over the deal. However, due to public scrutiny, Ruto ordered the cancellation of the deal.
This was after Gautam Adani was charged in the US for fraud, amidst bribery allegations in India.
The expansion of JKIA is expected to include the construction of a new terminal. The initial project cost for Adani was estimated to be over Ksh200 billion.
