US Embassy announces opportunities for Kenyans to teach Kiswahili in America

The United States (US) Embassy in Nairobi has invited Kenyans to apply for the 2026-2027 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) program.

In a statement on Wednesday April 23, the US Embassy noted that successful candidates will have an opportunity to teach Kiswahili in the U.S as well as gaining professional and cultural exchange experience.

“Apply for the 2026-2027 Fulbright FLTA Program and teach Kiswahili in the U.S. while gaining valuable professional and cultural exchange experience,” the statement read in part.

The Fulbright FLTA Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).

According to the US Government, the program offers Kenyan educators a chance to spend a year in the United States.

The program also offers grants to qualified Kenyan graduate students to study in the United States.

They may also apply to conduct research at U.S. institutions through the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program.

In addition, scholars are eligible for the Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program.

To qualify for the FLTAs program, one must reside in the country of nomination at the time of application, possess the equivalent of a U.S.

bachelor’s degree with a good academic record, have teaching experience and have interest in teaching your native language and culture to students in the U.S.

Other requirements include: being fluent in English, being flexible and having a willingness to learn, being able to work creatively, being adaptable to living in rural or urban areas, demonstrating maturity, integrity, and professionalism, and not hold U.S. citizenship.

The deadline for the applications is May 16, 2025.
