Governor Natembeya arraigned in court, pleads not guilty to alleged corruption charges

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to multiple corruption charges stemming from alleged irregular payments totaling more than KSh 6 million.

The charges were read in front of Magistrate C.N. Ondieki at the Anti-Corruption Court, following the governor’s overnight detention at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters.

The prosecution accuses Governor Natembeya of acquiring an indirect financial interest in county contracts while serving as a public officer from January 1, 2023 to April 30, 2025.

In the first count, the governor is accused of illegally benefiting from payments made by the County Government of Trans Nzoia to Mercy Chelangat, the director of Lyma Agro Science and the owner of Maira Store, both of which had active contracts with the county.

The second charge is for a conflict of interest, and the third is for unlawfully acquiring public property.

The prosecution alleges that Governor Natembeya improperly received KSh 3,252,568 through payments made to Lyma Agro Science Limited, Maira Store, and Easterly Winds Limited, all of which are said to be closely related to him.

Representing the state, lead prosecutor Alex Akula opposed the governor’s release on bail, citing compelling grounds outlined in a sworn affidavit submitted on Monday.

Akula argued that the governor poses a risk of interfering with key witnesses should he be released pending trial.

Governor Natembeya, through his legal team, denied all charges and sought to be released on bail, insisting that he is ready to comply with any court conditions.
