Babu Owino secures release of 200 offenders after admission to the bar

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, in his first act as an advocate of the High Court, secured the release of 200 Kenyans who were in prison for petty offences.

In a statement dated Friday, May 23, Babu revealed that he visited Nairobi Prison after his admission to the bar to secure the release of the offenders.

He expressed that the individuals were in prison for petty offences such as traffic offences.

The MP added that those who were in prison had been unable to post bail to secure their release.

“Upon my admission to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, I undertook my maiden assignment by going to Nairobi Prison to secure the release of people incarcerated for petty offences such as traffic offences, consuming illicit brews, drunk and disorderly et al,” he wrote.

“Most of them have been in custody for failure to pay fines or pay bail or to provide security for bond. Through my professional representation as an advocate, I secured the release of more than 200 persons.”

Following the gesture, Kenyans took to social media to commend the lawmaker for his kindness.

“This post can literally make someone cry. At least a leader who deeply cares for the less privileged,” Frank Mras posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“May our good God bless you abundantly wakili from one level to another,” Njuguna Davi added.

Babu was among over 600 lawyers who were admitted to the bar by Chief Justice Martha Koome.

Other notable individuals who were admitted to the bar on Friday were George Ng’ayu, the son of Land CS Alice Wahome.
