Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has suggested drastic actions against a section of musicians from the Kikuyu community who had an audience with Deputy President Kithure Kindiki last week.

On Friday, May 23, Kindiki played host to a group of artistes at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

The deputy president said the meeting was aimed at ‘finding ways of supporting the artistes through policy and protection of intellectual property rights.’

Samidoh, Jose Gatutura, Karangu Muraya, and Ben Githae were among the notable names in the group.

The meeting seems not to have sat well with Gachagua, who labelled the artistes traitors.

Addressing the faithful of AIPCA Kihoya in Kangema, Murang’a County on Sunday, May 25, the former deputy president asserted that the musicians erred by siding with the regime that has supposedly oppressed Kenyans.

As a way to get back at them, Gachagua asked his supporters to deplatform the musicians, massively unfollow them, snub their shows, shun their music, and even block them from events.

This, until they apologise, Gachagua said, adding that he had engaged with the elders to reach that resolution.

“We are saddened that they have betrayed us as a community…I met elders, and they  asked me to announce that; we should stop listening to their music; secondly, entertainment joints should cancel them, and if an establishment invites them, let us all boycott the establishments and patronise other joints that comply. On social media, we shall unfollow them. They were bribed with KSh 50,000, yet the people they went to have oppressed us. Unfollow them if they don’t apologise, and entertainment joints’ owners should stop inviting them. That is the only way to protect this community,” Gachagua declared.

At the same time, Gachagua vowed that his newly unveiled Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) would not condone influential figures who, despite having clout, do not have qualities befitting a leader.

He said the party tickets in 2027 would be issued based on competence and not popularity.

Gachagua stated that the time had come for Mt Kenya to have quality leaders.

“We must have a new crop of leaders who are of good quality. The ones Ruto has are incompetent and poor in judgement. They are easily swayed. I won’t allow such to get tickets in DCP. We must have competent and sound leaders who are driven by the common good of the people and not their selfish interests,” Gachagua said.
