I don’t love Sakaja, but nobody should impeach him; Gachagua

The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has stated that, despite not liking the Nairobi governor, Johnson Sakaja, he does not want him to be impeached.
While speaking during an interview with local Meru radio stations, on Friday, March 7, 2026 the outspoken Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader said that although he is not on good terms with Sakaja, he does not wish to see him face an impeachment as he did.
He added that the embattled governor, who was recently on the verge of being impeached, should be given ample time and a good working environment to finish his term and be removed at the ballot by Nairobi residents themselves, rather than be ousted from office.
“Hata huyu governor Sakaja, mimi simpendi hata kama ameumiza watu wetu lakini sitaki atolewe kwa impeachment; apatiwe nafasi ya miaka tano amalize kazi yake, tutamtoa,” GAchagua stated
Gachagua pointed accusing fingers at the head of state, President William Ruto, claiming that he is behind the push to have Sakaja removed from office.

He noted that the president is facilitating members of the county assembly to push for the governor’s impeachment.
He also expressed concern that since the 2010 constitution came into place and devolution was introduced, it is only the Mount Kenya region that has developed a habit of impeaching its leaders.
“Tangu devolution ianze mlima pekee yake ndio inafukuza magivernor; watu wetu wanapenda pesa sana.”
This comes a few days after Nairobi South B MCA and County Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Esther Waithera Chege announced that there is a fresh impeachment motion against Sakaja, citing 22 grounds for his removal from office.
