People Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has stated that she will not go back to the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

This comes at a time when Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has proposed revamping Azimio for the United Opposition to use it as a vehicle against William Ruto in 2027. Karua, while speaking during an interview with a local media station on Monday, March 30, 2026, dismissed these proposals, stating that Azimio la Umoja is dead and is like a ship that has sunk and cannot be resuscitated.

She went on to state that she left Azimio long ago and cannot go back, saying that even her PLP party members have nothing good to remember about the Azimio coalition since, according to her, their stay in Azimio yielded nothing positive.

“Sioni PLP ikienda Azimio, na kama kuna watu wataenda Azimio watatuambia kwa nini turudi kwa meli iliyo zama na tueunda meli mpya,” she said.

She continued to state that even within the United Opposition, they have not sat down to deliberate on whether they will join Azimio la Umoja, emphasising that it is only Kalonzo Musyoka who is in the formation and that his presence in Azimio should not be mistaken for the position of the entire United Opposition.

“Tukiwa kwa united opposition, hatujaketi tukakubaliana ya kwamba tutarudi Misri na tukaarifu Wakenya ya kwamba tuko united opposition na tutawarifu Wakenya kwamba tutamjulisha,” Karua added.

She further stated that if anyone wants to go back to Azimio, they should explain why the coalition should be used in their quest for 2027 when the United Opposition already has a formation—and, according to her, they have already reserved names for it.

“Mmmoja kati yetu kwenda Azimio haimanishi tumeenda.”

This comes at a time when Kalonzo Musyoka has said that he will try to convince his fellow United Opposition principals to use Azimio as their 2027 political vehicle, arguing that there is no need to form a new political outfit when one already exists.

Kalonzo, who was recently appointed to replace Raila Odinga as the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance party leader, stated that after their upcoming retreat, following the conclusion of their countrywide tours, he will suggest this idea to them.

He added that what they need to do is perhaps change the name to Komboa Kenya or Ukombozi, insisting that there is no need to form a new outfit.
