ODM not a village party, Junet Mohammed tells Gachagua
Suna East MP Junet Mohammed has reaffirmed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) remains the only political outfit with support cutting across all regions of the country.
Speaking during the party’s youth convention held at Jamhuri Showground on Monday, Junet dismissed rival political formations as narrow and regionally confined, insisting that ODM stands out as a truly national party.
“ODM is a major party, it is a national party. ODM is not a village party like those small parties that were formed the other day,” Junet said.
He took direct aim at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of persistently criticising ODM leadership while lacking the political base to rival the party.
“A person like Rigathi Gachagua makes noise every day, he lectures us all the time. He mentions the name of our party leader Dr Oburu Oginga every day, national chairperson Gladys Wanga, and even me. His party DCP is not big enough to match our party even in Migori county,” Junet said.

Junet further emphasised that ODM’s strength lies in its diversity, particularly in urban centres such as Nairobi, which he described as a cosmopolitan hub that reflects the party’s national appeal.
“We will show Rigathi that here in Nairobi, it is not a place for village parties, a place for one tribe. Nairobi has all tribes in it and the party that has all tribes in it is ODM,” he said.
Addressing the ongoing political discourse around the so-called “broad-based government,” Junet clarified that it is not a political party but rather a governing arrangement supported by both the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and ODM.
“People are saying they are supporting broad-based government. But broad-based is not a party; the party to support is ODM,” he noted. “If anyone wants to form the government with us in 2027, if they want to enter into an alliance with us, they must go through ODM.”
The convention, which attracted hundreds of delegates, youth leaders, and party officials, marks the beginning of a nationwide mobilisation campaign targeting young people.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy by ODM to revitalise its support base following a period of political uncertainty.
