Murkomen responds to Gachagua over claims of an assassination plot
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has responded to claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that a police unit had been deployed to assassinate him.
Speaking during a press conference after issuing a security briefing on the June 25 demonstrations, the CS dismissed Gachagua’s allegations, saying the claims were made for political attention.
“Most of the things he was talking about, that he was going to be assassinated, he is a clout chaser. So anything that is of public interest, he likes to make it about himself,” Murkomen said.
The remarks were in response to a June 24 statement by Gachagua in which he alleged that a police unit he had previously accused of plotting to assassinate him had been redeployed to Nyeri County ahead of the June 25 demonstrations.
Gachagua claimed officers operating under the code name “Nairobi Sierra” had assembled in Mathira and were preparing to carry out attacks in the region.

According to the former Deputy President, the same officers were involved in an incident at a church service in Othaya earlier this year, where he alleged they had intended to target him but failed to do so.
However, Murkomen rejected the allegations, stating that Gachagua had made similar claims about the previous administration and minister.
“I am used to his tirades. By the way, it is not a new thing. Even in the last administration he used to say the same about the former minister. But I see now he is very cozy with that minister and he doesn’t ask questions about what he used to say in the past,” he said.
The CS further accused the former Deputy President of repeatedly engaging in ethnic profiling of public officers, arguing that Gachagua had consistently singled out the Deputy Inspector General of Police in his remarks instead of directing his concerns to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who heads the National Police Service.
“He must respect offices. This ethnic profiling of public officers for personal gain must come to an end,” he added.
