IEBC responds on Jacaranda chaos witnessed during Ruto’s rally on Sunday with Babu Owino accusing the DP of stage managing the chaos.

Independent and Electoral Boundaries Commission chair Wafula Chebukati has said the electoral body has no powers to investigate violence witnessed at the Kenya Kwanza Alliance rally in Jacaranda grounds, Nairobi, on Sunday, 19.

In a statement on Monday, 20 Chebukati said the Commission has no constitutional mandate calling on politicians and supporters to observe peace.

During the Jacaranda violence, youths allied to Ruto engaged those affiliated with Azimio coalition in a stone-throwing.

DP Ruto’s convoy was pelted with stones while on his way to Jacaranda grounds.

While condemning the incident, Chebukati directed DPP Noordin Haji to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the Jacaranda grounds violence.

“The Hight Court declared the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee unconstitutional… It is only the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) that has the power to order investigations and to probe offenders under the Act,” the statement read.

Ruto blamed the chaos on Raila who he accused of hiring youths to disrupt his rally.

However, Raila dismissed Ruto’s remarks accusing him of seeking sympathy votes.

Babu Owino accuses Ruto of stage managing the chaos

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has found himself in the blame for the violence after he claimed to have booked the same facility.

However, he has alleged that Ruto’s camp stage-managed the violence.

On Monday, Owino shared two images on his Twitter account, one of which showed teenagers hurling stones at Ruto’s convoy and the other of which showed the same fans escorting Ruto’s convoy.

“Look at these photos keenly. The guys in the same uniform stoned Ruto’s car and at the same time provided security at the same rally. Wacha kutubeba mafala after stage managing your own attack,” Owino said.
