Raila Odinga’s allies demand thorough probe on JKIA Venezuelan saga

Raila Odinga’s allies demand a thorough probe on the JKIA Venezuelan saga to ensure the credibility of the August elections.

Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s allies want a thorough probe of the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Venezuelan nationals at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while carrying election materials.

The Venezuelan national was in possession of stickers belonging to the IEBC, which according to the police had not been declared to allow them to provide requisite security and escort as per laid down protocols.

There has been an altercation between the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati and the National Police Service continues over the issue.

Led by Azimio Party Secretary General, Junet Mohamed, the leaders claimed there was a plot to rig the election to the advantage of one of the candidates.

“Our opponents have sensed defeat and are making frantic efforts to rig the elections. We want the individual arrested with electoral materials at JKIA probed,” said Mr. Mohamed.

Since the arrest, it has been a back and forth exchange, which has sparked conspiracy theories among the rival politicians and ordinary Kenyans.

According to the IEBC boss, the Venezuelan national was also in possession of laptops, flash disks, and mobile phones containing sensitive information relating to the forthcoming election.

However, as the investigations continue, it’s like the electoral commission is clearly not being honest on the issue surrounding the Venezuelan expert and his luggage at the airport.

Why would sensitive election material be in the personal luggage of a foreigner? Why was there no accompanying IEBC official?

It is also not lost of a similar occurrence in July when the first batch of election materials arrived in the country.

The arrival seemed so sudden that the first time it was communicated to the media it was just a few hours before their arrival.
