IEBC responds to alleged Junet audio clip linking Azimio to election rigging
IEBC responds to alleged Junet audio clip linking Azimio to election rigging in the next week’s general elections.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has responded to an audio clip in which Suna East MP Junet Mohamed is reported to have called a high-level meeting with the commission’s top officials.
Juliana Cherera, the vice chairperson of the IEBC, stated during a press conference on August 1 that no such meeting had been scheduled between Junet and any of their commissioners.
She did, however, note that the electoral commission had started an investigation into the video.
“As far as I am concerned there is nothing factual about it. We have our ears in the ground and people on social media who have been monitoring what has been happening.
“It has been shared out in the pool of experts who shall look into that,” Cherera affirmed.
Azimio coalition secretary-general Junet Mohammed on Sunday, July 31, dismissed a secret audio recording linking him to election rigging plans.
The purported audio clip published by Ruto allied politicians, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also implicated a top-ranking official at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC)
The Suna East MP called the widely circulated recording fraudulent and doctored by political rivals in a press release issued on Sunday, July 31 in an effort to discredit him and Azimio.
He accused the rivals of using the audio to garner sympathy votes ahead of the August 9, General Election.
In addition, the commissioner called on the public to disregard any information on the upcoming poll – save for that made available during IEBC’s daily media briefs or shared on its official social media handles.
“Let me make it categorically clear that the only information that is legitimate came from the commission through the daily press briefings and official social media handles,” she stated.
The IEBC vice chair also dismissed allegations of plans to compromise the KIEMS kits from the warehouses where they were being stored.
“Every week, we have been inviting IT experts from all parties to the warehouses to ascertain what is contained in the KIEMS kits and the process is very transparent,” Cherera clarified.
