Am not on a political campaign; Ruto on IG Kanja presence in his Mt Kenya region tour

President William Ruto has denied reports that he is on a political campaign but on a development tour in the Mt Kenya region.

Responding to uproar following the presence of Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja in the tours, Ruto expressed that Kenyans needed to tell the difference between political and development tours.

While in the company of Kanja in Tharaka Nithi County on Friday, April 4, Ruto expressed that his tours were enshrined in the constitution as the government needed to engage with Kenyans.

He also expressed that the government needed to engage with all stakeholders in the development process. In Tharaka Nithi, Ruto was inspecting the Kenya Police Housing project.

“For the comfort of those who may be confused or wondering, there is no campaign in Kenya. We are doing what the people of Kenya asked us to do,” the President remarked.

“IG (Kanja), I want to say that we will continue to work with the men in uniform to make sure that we secure the country and for the development of our country.”

On the other hand, he also wondered why the IG was being singled out, yet other police officers also attended his meetings.

“When the IG is not there, there are so many officers who represent him in those meetings, and there is no difference. They do not come to do politics,” Ruto stated.

” I do not know what difference there is in the meeting where I was in Nyeri. There were 300 police officers. Why do you single out the IG?”

The presence of Kanja in Ruto’s tour of Nyeri County has elicited uproar from Kenyans and civil organisations.

Notably, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) even demanded his resignation should he fail to issue a public apology.
