Anonymous philanthropist volunteers to yay SHA for 113,000 Kenyans
President William Ruto announced that 113,000 Kenyans would benefit from the Social Health Authority (SHA) program after an anonymous philanthropist pledged to cover their contributions.
Speaking on Friday, the President revealed that the generous donor has chosen to remain anonymous despite making the substantial commitment to support fellow Kenyans who cannot afford the healthcare coverage.
“There is one friend of Kenya who has donated towards SHA. He has promised to pay for 113,000 Kenyans. He has, however, requested that he remain anonymous,” President Ruto stated.
The President expressed his gratitude to the philanthropist, describing him as exceptionally generous.
“I want to thank him for the Kenyan government and people. That man with a big heart, a philanthropist, I want to say thank you very much for supporting our Citizens who otherwise would not be able to pay,” Ruto said.
Beyond the anonymous donor’s contribution, President Ruto also highlighted the role of Members of Parliament in supporting their constituents’ SHA registration through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) program.
“We also have Members of Parliament who have stepped up. MPs know that in the CDF program, you can pay for some of your constituents who cannot pay for themselves,” the President noted.
The President confirmed that discussions with the national government CDF management have established that the legal framework supports MPs and constituencies in covering SHA costs for those unable to afford them.
“I have discussed CDF management with the national government, and they have assured me that the law regulations support MPs and constituencies in paying for those who are not able to,” he explained.

Several constituencies have taken action, with their MPs using CDF resources to cover SHA contributions for their constituents.
“I want to thank Kasipul Kapondo Constituency; the MP has paid for her constituents. Nakuru East MP as well, has followed suit, Kikuyu MP, Lang’ata MP, Turbo constituency MP, and Maara Constituency. Through that 5,800 people have benefited for SHA,” President Ruto announced.
On September 2, President Ruto announced that the government would cover SHA costs for 1.5 million Kenyans who cannot afford the registration fees. Head of Creative Economy and Special Projects, Dennis Itumbi, later confirmed that payment mechanisms for these beneficiaries would commence the following week.
The announcement came three months after the President unveiled measures to optimize SHA, making it more accessible to Kenyans across different economic circumstances.
