Azimio links top UDA politician to Sondu clashes in Kisumu-Kericho border as they call for investigations

Azimio links top UDA politician to Sondu clashes in Kisumu-Kericho border as they call for investigations.

The Azimio la Umoja coalition has linked the violence being witnessed along the Kisumu and Kericho counties border in Sondu town to a local politician.

In a press statement on Thursday, October 5, Azimio sensationally claimed that the politician is claiming part of Kisumu County during the envisaged boundary review.

The opposition coalition has claimed that senior leaders from Kericho including the governor Dr Eric Mutai have sponsored the violence that has pitted communities from the two counties against each other.

Further, the Raila Odinga-led outfit has claimed that there were some leaders from the national government who were behind the clashes that started on Tuesday night.

“Big names are behind this violence. They include leaders and politicians in neighbouring counties and in the national government,” the statement read in part.

“In particular, we are demanding investigations to be carried out upon individuals who have been mentioned as sponsors of the violence, who include the Kericho County Governor, Dr Eric Mutai.”

The clashes on the Kisumu and Kericho borders have been emerging each electoral cycle with Kericho and Nandi counties laying claim to parts of Kisumu counties.

Particularly, Kericho has claimed that Sondu should be part of the tea-growing county, while Nandi has in the past claimed Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibos and Koru.

Azimio on Thursday alluded to the push to cede parts of the counties as the main cause of the violence which they believe was sponsored by top Kenya Kwanza politicians.

“The violence currently going on in Sondu is not an ordinary disagreement between villagers,” Azimio noted.

“We are convinced that this violence is being sponsored by local politician who have set their claiming part of Kisumu County during the envisaged boundary review,” the opposition coalition stated.

Meanwhile, Nyanza governors Gladys Wangs (Homa Bay), Ochillo Ayacko (Migori), James Orengo (Siaya) and Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu) in a joint statement earlier called on Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to deploy General Service Unit (GSU) officers to the area to quell the clashes.

The four governors noted that attempts by local police officers to handle the clashes in Sondu have been futile.

“We strongly propose that the government urgently sends a contingent of GSU to that area to restore peace and security,” the joint statement read in part.

The Nyanza governors also claimed that the Sondu clashes have resulted in the death of seven people, several herds of cattle stolen and homes burnt down.
