Canada issues travel advisory against Kenya over power blackout and crime

Canada has issued a travel alert against Kenya this festive season after the UK issued a similar advisory

Canada has issued a travel alert against Kenya this festive season after the UK issued a similar advisory.

The travel alert warned Canadian nationals to exercise caution when traveling to Kenya amid increased cases of national power blackouts that affect JKIA, SGR, terrorism, and high levels of crime among other factors.

The alert cautioned Canadians against traveling to Nairobi’s Eastleigh, Kibera, Mathare, and Pangani areas because of crime.

It also urged them to avoid all travel to areas that border the Somalia border, such as Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Lamu Counties, because of crime and the likelihood of kidnapping.

“Be particularly alert during religious holidays, sporting events, and public celebrations. Terrorists have carried out attacks during these events,” part of the warning reads.

The citizens have also been asked to safeguard their travel documents and be cautious while visiting entertainment joints to avoid being drugged.

“Foreigners volunteering with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have sometimes reported incidents of fraud, threats, and mistreatment by local personnel,” the Canadian government stated.

The travel advisory by Canada comes after the UK warned its citizens against travelling to six regions highlighted as the main targets of terror groups.

UK warned its citizens against visiting crowded areas like malls, which have been targeted before.

Some areas highlighted by the UK were the Kenya-Somali border, Eastern Garissa, Mandera, Tana River County and Lamu counties, and the coast between Tana River and Galana River.
