Chebukati threatens Azimio leader Raila Odinga with a lawsuit over video footage, giving him a 7-day ultimatum to present evidence.

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chair Wafula Chebukati has threatened to sue Azimio leader Raila Odinga over allegations that three commissioners visited his home.

Chebukati gave Raila seven days to present the CCTV evidence to support charges that he visited his house before declaring the results of the 2022 presidential election in a demand letter dated Tuesday, January 31.

At the Jacaranda rally on January 29, Odinga asserted that Chebukati, former commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye, and Chebukati had paid him a visit.

The letter’s delivery to Raila was confirmed by a lawyer from Saroni and Stevens Advocates.

The lawyer stated in the letter that their client was upset with the ODM leader for not exercising any prudence when making the comments that damaged Chebukati’s reputation.

“Further, our Client is aggrieved that you took no caution or responsibility while making the adverse remarks with the consequence that our Client has suffered and continues to suffer serious reputational injury, taking into account his status and position as former Chairman of IEBC,” the statement read in part.

In the document signed by lawyer Steve Ogola, the former IEBC boss threatened legal action if the video is not made available within the time frame.

“Our instructions are to demand from you, as of right, which we hereby do, to be furnished with the alleged video footage within seven days from the date hereof.

“Kindly take notice that if we do not receive the video footage demanded hereinabove, within the Demand Period, we shall be constrained to institute appropriate adverse but lawful proceedings against you.

While addressing supporters at the Jacaranda grounds on January 29, the former Prime Minister threatened to leak the video footage.

“I want to ask you, what did you come to do at my house? What did you ask of me? And I have footage for that, you play with me, and I will release it,” Odinga remarked

The remarks by the former Premier also elicited a response from President William Ruto, who challenged the Azimio chief to substantiate his claims.

Ruto insisted that Raila invited him, the three former commissioners, and the IEBC officials in order to explain why he, a presidential contender, would receive them prior to the declaration of the results.
