Chebukati’s daughter reveals how her father escaped assassination during the 2022 elections.

Wafula Chebukati’s daughter, Rachel Nekesa, has revealed the terrifying moments their family went through at the height of the 2022 General Election.

Speaking at the send-off of her father in Kiminini, Trans Nzoia county, Nekesa shared that her father had been receiving threats from various parties that she did not mention.

She mentioned the specific threat of her father being assassinated before announcing the presidential results on August 15, 2022.

“On the day, just a moment before he went to Bomas to announce the results, at that time he had already received intelligence that somebody wanted to end his life to stop him from announcing the results,” she stated.

“We sat together, and the pastor prayed, and I hugged my father, and he looked at me, and I looked at him, and I said to him that he doesn’t need to explain anything because I knew he would stand with the truth and for Kenyans,” she stated

According to Nekesa, Chebukati shed a tear, something that she admits she never saw him do, knowing that that could have been the last meeting he had with his family.

Nekesa handed her father the speech, which she had drafted for him, that he would read after the result announcement and assured him that the family would be by his side in whatever circumstance.

“We looked at each other without really saying much but knowing that that might have been the last time we could have seen each other. I have never seen my dad cry, but that day my dad shed a tear,” she said.

Nekesa explained that as a family, they cheered Chubakati up as he left their home to the Bomas where chaos had been witnessed as the results delayed, causing tension across the country.

After the chaos at Bomas following the results announcement, Nekesa revealed that Chebukati went home bleeding.

She further recalled that after announcing the results, Chebukati returned home and seemed unsettled.

He had blood oozing on his forehead, suggesting the former IEBC boss had been assaulted.

“The speech he gave at Bomas was so impactful that even after he came home he said that he did not remember what he said; he took off his shoes, and he was bleeding, but he even didn’t realize he was bleeding; this was just my dad, to get the work done, and he was proud for what he had done in Bomas,” she stated.

Nekesa eulogised her father as a firm public servant who could not be compromised while undertaking his mandate.

Chebukati, who died on February 20, will be laid to rest at his Kiminini home.
