Defence CS Aden Duale asks DP Rigathi Gachagua to join the fight against the use and sale of Muguka.

Defense Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has asked Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to join the fight against the sale and use of Muguka in the country.

Speaking in Garissa on Sunday, June 2, Duale said Rigathi was fighting substance abuse in Central and Rift Valley through a leaders conference.

He appealed to Gachagua to convene a conference to discuss support for Governors seeking to ban the stimulant candidly.

“Regarding the emerging story of muguka, I will ask the Deputy President in the next two weeks to call that conference because he is the deputy president of the Republic of Kenya. At the conference, we should candidly discuss the effects (of Muguka) and show evidence of the effects of Muguka on certain regions and communities,” the Defence CS stated.

The CS stated that Muguka should be fought with the same energy that the second in command has directed towards illicit brew in the Mount Kenya region.

“If we are fighting alcohol in Central Kenya, Rift Valley, Western Kenya, and every part of the country, Kenya is one, so we must fight Muguka,” he said.

His comments came days after governors in the Northeastern counties of Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera hinted at joining the coastal counties in imposing a ban on the cash crop grown in Embu and Meru.

The religious caucus led by the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) chairman in Garissa county, Abdullahi Salat, complained that the drug had crippled development in the region and eroded the moral fabric of their society.

“We want governors from Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Tana River, and Marsabit to follow that example and that drug should be banned in these counties because it has affected the health, education, and resources of our people,” Salat pleaded.

He further noted that the promoters of the product have failed to explain how the drug is good for the community or its consumers.

“There is no day it has been profitable even to those selling them. Their children have also been affected, and they are even leaving school. They are not even comparable to vegetable vendors,” he explained.

Despite the calls and lobbying for the support of the ban against Muguka, leaders from regions that plant and view the product as their economic strength have placed barriers to ensure the ban does not take effect.

The ban in the counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, and Taita Taveta has hit a snag after farmers, lawyers, stakeholders, and interested parties lodged a case to stop the executive orders by the three coastal governors.
