DP Kindiki dropped as UDA deputy party leader

Kindiki has been removed from his position as the deputy party leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) after the ruling party officially merged with Amani National Congress (ANC)

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has been removed from his position as the deputy party leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) after the ruling party officially merged with Amani National Congress (ANC).

Speaking during the official ceremony at the State House, UDA National Chairperson Cecily Mbarire said the new party would see changes in its logo and symbols.

“The UDA party and the Amani National Congress have today merged as one, known as the UDA party; that is also going to change name and the branding,” Mbarire said.

“The party has incorporated ANC identity symbols in the logo, imagery, and topography and shall resultantly undertake a myriad of other changes in the governance and operations of the party.”

Mbarire said that in the new arrangement, Kindiki would be dropped in favour of Lamu governor Issa Timamy, who was formerly the deputy party leader of the ANC.

Also, ANC chairman Kelvin Lunani will also be incorporated into the new party leadership as the vice chairperson of the new outfit while ANC’s Secretary-General Omboko Milemba will be the deputy secretary-general of the new party.

“We are going to bring in the ANC secretariat into the new formation, including directors at the top level and staff that will help in getting this new formation forward,” Mbarire added.

On November 11, 2024, the UDA party made Kindiki its deputy party leader following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The resolution came after UDA Secretary-General Omar Hassan indicated that the party provides that the deputy president becomes the deputy party leader.

The UDA NEC noted that following Gachagua’s impeachment, the party’s constitution requires that he relinquish his role as the party’s deputy leader.

“That by virtue of the resolution of the National Assembly and the vote of the Senate and by operation of Articles 75 (3) and 145 (7) of the Constitution of Kenya as read together with Article 8.2.19 of the UDA Party Constitution, Rigathi Gachagua is unable to perform the duties of the office of Deputy Party Leader and subsequently ceases to hold office as Deputy Party Leader,” the NEC resolution read in part.

In his acceptance speech, Kindiki had assured the party of his commitment to the ideals envisioned in its constitution and promised to work hard to ramp up its membership.

“I want to assure you of my unwavering commitment to the ideals that our party stands for. I will work with all the organs established under our party constitution for the good and better performance of our party,” Kindiki said.
