Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth has confirmed that the hawker who was shot in the head in Nairobi CBD is currently undergoing emergency surgery.
Speaking to the press outside the Kenyatta National Hospital on Tuesday, June 17, Amoth said the victim was promptly attended to upon arrival at around 4 PM.
“The patient was received here at around 4 PM; he was promptly evaluated by the emergency team, the necessary first aid was thereafter administered, and the necessary tests conducted,” he said.
Amoth added that neurosurgeons recommended immediate surgical intervention following the assessments.
“Evaluation by the neurosurgeons indicated that he was required to undergo an emergency neurosurgical procedure. As we speak, the patient is in theatre with the neurosurgical team,” he added.
Amoth also revealed that intensive care arrangements had already been put in place in anticipation of post-surgery needs.

“As a precaution, we have prepared an ICU bed because a case of such nature requires ICU support immediately in the post-operation period,” he stated.
The hawker was shot at point-blank range during protests in Nairobi CBD, an incident that has sparked national outrage and led to the arrest of the police officer involved.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the Inspector-General of Police ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of the officer involved.
“The National Police Service (NPS) has noted with great concern an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed civilian by a police officer using an anti-riot shotgun, within the Nairobi Central Business District on 17th June 2025.
“Following this incident, the Inspector-General National Police Service ordered the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested,” the NPS said.
