The burial of slain Molo activist Richard Otieno was abruptly cut short in his rural village after leaders from Siaya and Nakuru counties clashed over an opportnunity to address the gathering.

The disruption forced the family to hurriedly proceed to the grave, where Otieno was laid to rest, even as calls for justice dominated the funeral service.

Tensions flared when Usonga Member of County Assembly (MCA) Sylvester Madialo concluded his speech but failed to hand over the microphone to Nakuru County leaders as protocol had dictated.

This ignited an uproar, with Nakuru MCAs and their delegation forcefully demanding their right to address the mourners.

In a dramatic scene witnessed by all, members of the Nakuru delegation grabbed the microphone, leading to an all-out shouting match that left mourners in shock.

“Richard was taken from us when he was already gone, and now you are taking away our microphone—why? To the people here, we say this: we stood with Richard when he was alive, and even now that he is gone, yet you come here to deny us the microphone,” cried out a visibly distraught woman from Nakuru, her voice heavy with emotion.

Elburgon MCA Njuguna Mwaura, angered by the perceived slight, condemned the move as a deliberate effort to silence Nakuru leaders.

“All that deceit was planned so that the people of Nakuru would remain silent, but we must speak out. It was a scheme by two people, and we will not accept it,” he declared. As the altercation escalated, the family and church hastily moved Otieno’s body to its final resting place, abandoning the official program.

The abrupt conclusion of the funeral left leaders addressing only a fraction of the mourners who remained behind.

“We demand justice for Richard. Those who planned and those who carried out the killing should all rot in jail,” stated Bernard Lang’at, the Mariashoni MCA, his voice firm with resolve.

Otieno, a well-known activist in Molo, was murdered three weeks ago, a crime that sent shockwaves through the country.

Although five suspects have been arrested in connection with his death, the family and mourners insist that justice is far from served.

Roselinda Wamaitha, the family’s lawyer, did not mince words as she addressed the gathering, calling for a proper probe into the killing.

“We are tired of seeing every day how many boys will die in this government. We voted for this government but you don’t respect our constitutional rights,” she lamented.
