President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga on Monday, August 18, convened a joint ODM–Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group meeting in Karen to strengthen their working relationship ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting, the first of its kind between the two parties, brought together nearly all MPs allied to the broad-based government.
It follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two leaders in February 2025 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), witnessed by ODM secretary Edwin Sifuna and his UDA counterpart, Hassan Omar.
The meeting, the first of its kind between the two parties, brought together nearly all MPs allied to the broad-based government.
Key issues on the agenda included economic recovery, job creation, lowering the cost of living, electoral reforms, youth and women empowerment, strengthening devolution, and anti-corruption measures.
The meeting also sought to structure a joint legislative agenda to guide the bipartisan coalition moving forward.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, who read out the attendance list, noted that the session would ease the work of the five-member team led by Senator Agnes Zani and Comrade Gabriel Oguda, which will oversee implementation of the NADCO report and other MoUs.
The gathering also attracted members of parties formerly aligned to the Azimio coalition, including Jubilee, Wiper, and DAP-Kenya, all of whom Ichung’wah said were now working with the Kenya Kwanza government.

Notably absent, however, were ODM key figures such as Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
ODM secretary general Edwin Sifuna had faced backlash in ODM over his stance on working with President William Ruto.
Sifuna had repeatedly stated he would not work with Ruto, vowing to quit ODM should Raila endorse the president in 2027.
Babu, though expressing discomfort with the arrangement, had maintained loyalty to Raila and had already declared his bid for the Nairobi governorship in 2027, even if denied the ODM ticket.
Their no-show sparked questions among Kenyans, especially in light of their recent comments on the Ruto–Raila partnership.
ODM was represented at the meeting by other leaders, including deputy party leader Geoffrey Osotsi and Kisii governor Simba Arati.
