Former CJ Maraga kicks off nationwide consultations for 2027 bid

Former Chief Justice (CJ) David Maraga officially launched his first town hall meeting in his hometown of Kebirigo, Nyamira County, as he intensifies efforts to solidify his 2027 presidential bid.

Maraga, who engaged with various political leaders from the county, reiterated his confidence in contesting for the presidency, affirming that he is well-suited for the country’s top leadership come the 2027 elections.

This development comes as a section of Gusii leaders declared they would not oppose either Maraga or former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i from vying for the presidency, asserting that both have a constitutional right to seek the position.

In yet another signal of his commitment to the 2027 race, the former chief justice received an endorsement on Monday to pursue the country’s highest office.

The meeting, held at Kebirigo’s Viongozi Centre, convened grassroots political leaders from Nyamira. Maraga described the gathering as the beginning of a broader national consultative process.

“Vijana waliniuliza nifikirie nisimame na wao, wazee pia wameniuliza, na leo nimeanza hapa Nyamira na nitawaambia kwamba mmenikubali.” David Maraga, former Chief Justice said.

Maraga utilized the platform to elaborate on the rationale behind his nationwide consultations and his vision for transforming the country if elected.

Several former MPs endorsed Maraga’s candidacy, citing his integrity and leadership credentials.

Augustino Neto – Former MP, Ndhiwa: “Do you know why we are vouching for President Maraga? It is because of his track record. We want him to deal with corruption.”

Nyamira-Based Politician: “Sisi tumekuja hapa kumuunga mkono Maraga. He is a true leader. Kwa maswala ya haki, ni Maraga.”

Meanwhile, uncertainty looms among regional leaders who believe the Gusii community should rally behind a single formidable candidate between Maraga and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.

However, a section of elders from the region has stated that they will not pressure any candidate to step aside, emphasizing that it is their democratic right to run for office.

George Nyakundi – Chairman, Mwanyang’etinge Heritage: “Sisi kama wazee hatutasema eti ni huyu ama nani. Kila mtu ako na sababu yake ya kutaka kiti hicho.”

Maraga’s town hall meetings will now extend to the Coastal region, followed by Western Kenya, before he proceeds to the Mount Kenya region.
